The Patna Metro train will run along two parallel corridors and will be completed in two phases in the first round of development.

Phase 1

Phase 1 will be featuring two Patna metro routes, the first one connecting connect Danapur going through Rupaspur, Raja Bazaar all the way to Vidyut Bhawan, and finally Patna Junction. Meanwhile, the latter will connect Patna junction through Gandhi Maidan and Patna University to Zero Mile and a new proposed Bus Terminal. Phase 1 is scheduled to go live by 2024, in the near future with Phase 2 following soon.

Phase 2

Phase 2, like its predecessor, will feature two Patna metro routes, the latter connects Mithapur Chowk going through Ranipur Chak, Guru Ka Bagh, Didarganj all the way to Fatuha Junction. Meanwhile, the alternate metro route will be connecting Patna Bypass Chowk through Patna Secretariat, Khoja Imli, AIIMS, Patna Airport all the way to Kurji.

It’s Impact

Corruption

The estimated cost to build Patna Metro is about 18,000 crore Indian rupees. And we know already know, money and politics go hand in hand. So owing to past experiences, it is highly unlikely that such an amount will not disrupt the political scenario in Bihar, which is already in shambles thanks to the rivalry between two major parties of Bihar. Remember the 2G Scam ? And the Fodder Scam ? Another such political scandal will rock the bedrock of Indian politics, and we fervently hope that this new initiative goes through smoothly and that we see the Patna Metro project get completed in earnest.

Population Influx

As we see the Patna metro project start its first run, we would have already seen a huge increase in the town’s population, more so than previous years. A part of which will include folks from nearby villages moving to Patna to witness the marvel that is the Patna metro train, and to improve their standard of living. Not only are the metros cheaper than traditional means of transport, but they are swifter and without hassles, which I am sure the townspeople will enjoy. Also, it would as no surprise that a lot of people who previously migrated to newer cities will decide to come back, either due to new work opportunities or ease of life. So don’t be surprised if you don’t find Patna metro train compartments to be packed!

Employment Disruption

As the population increases in the city, people will find it more difficult to get jobs. More unskilled labour will flood the streets, decreasing jobs for daily wage workers who live in the city whereas skilled individuals will see competition from people who come from nearby cities. The Patna metro project will lighten a few hearts, but dim a few, as is the case with most of these things. So its more important than ever before for Nitish Kumar to focus on the economic development in Bihar, and focus on checking the rising unemployment in his own backyard.

A decrease in Pollution

With the Patna metro, traffic in and around the city will be curbed. As the city traffic lessens, so will the foul emissions from the cars and buses. Thus leaving the air a little less polluted, and lessen the rising rates of asthma cases amongst the population. It is noteworthy to mention that while the government is doing its part in toning down the pollution in the city, NGOs like Prakashoday Foundation help the environment by planting trees and saplings around the city. Kudos to such kindred spirits for making our home better!

Political Impact

The upcoming elections are likely to be in favour of the Dynamic Duo.

Regardless of the fact about the increase in unemployment rates, the clear winner here will be Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. And the timing of the bhoomipoojan in Feb 2019  comes as no surprise, just as the 2019 Lok Sabha elections are upon us, the Prime Minister has all but secured one of the largest constituencies in the country with this masterstroke.

Now that you have enough information, it is for you to decide whether this new project will be a blessing or a curse. But one thing’s for sure, the new Patna metro map ensures all corners of the city are well connected, and this will help in reducing street traffic. Also with the new metro project, more and more business will migrate to Patna, thus bringing a more skilled workforce to the mix.

Moreover, its been ages since anything new came to us Patnaites and the central government’s approval will for sure improve the image of Bihar in our countrymen’s mindset. So let’s keep the light burning bright, for hope for a cleaner and better Patna!
